The route

The Prithvi Highway connecting Kathmandu to Pokhara is 200 km and takes 5–7 hours depending on traffic, road conditions, and how many stops you make. It's one of Nepal's best-maintained highways, but don't let that fool you — the road narrows significantly around Mugling and Damauli.

Best time to leave

Leave Kathmandu before 7 am to beat the Ring Road traffic and reach the open highway before trucks slow everything down. Avoid driving after dark — road signage is poor and animals cross frequently at night.

The Bandipur detour

Turn off at Dumre (about 3.5 hours from Kathmandu) and drive 12 km uphill to Bandipur, a preserved Newari hilltop town with stunning Himalayan views. It adds 1.5–2 hours total but is absolutely worth it. Park at the base and walk the pedestrian streets.

Fuel stops

Fill up in Kathmandu before you leave. The next reliable fuel station is at Naubise (30 min out), then Mugling (halfway), then Damauli. Don't assume every roadside pump is open — carry a small jerry can if your vehicle has a large engine.

Landslide protocol

The Prithvi Highway is prone to landslides during and after monsoon. If you encounter a blockage, don't try to drive around it — wait for the Nepal Army or road department to clear it. Keep snacks and water in the car for this reason. Check the Department of Roads' social media before heading out during monsoon season.
